Faces of Pee Dee

“Buddy” works in a small shop behind his house near Hemingway, SC.

He is known as “The Bowl Man”. His bread bowls and trays are made from the stumps left behind after loggers harvest the timber from the swamps in and around the Pee Dee.

The tupelo stumps are cut when the water is low and delivered to “Buddy’s” front yard to cure. He has them sawn into slabs he then carves into bowls and trays.

His bowls and trays are treated with mineral oil before being used to serve all kinds of dishes from salads to Bar-B-Q. “Buddy” has shipped to 27 states. His bowls and trays are a favorite to Charlestonians.

He is 81 years “young”.
